Indications
Treatment of Bronchitis, Otitis media acute,
Cervicitis and Urethritis gonococcal, Cervicitis and Urethritis nongonococcal, Chancroid,
Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease, Pelvic inflammatory disease, Pharyngitis, Tonsillitis,
Pneumonia community-acquired
Skin and soft tissue infections, Sinusitis acute, bacterial.
Usual adult and adolescent dose
Cervicitis, or Urethritis nongonococcal or Chancroid in men oral 1g as a single dose.
Cervicitis and Urethritis gonococcal 2g as a single dose.
Usual pediatric dose
Otitis media acute or, Pneumonia due to Chlamydia pneumonia, Haemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenza, Mycoplasma pneumonia, or Streptococcus pneumoniae: Infants and children 6 months to 12 years of age: 10mg/kg of body weight up to 500mg, on the first day, then 5mg/kg if body weight up to 250mg, on days two through five.
Infants up to 6 months of age: safety and efficacy have not been established.
Pharyngitis or Tonsillitis, streptococcal: children 2 to 12 years of age: Oral, 12mg/kg of body weight up to 500 mg once a day for five days.
Infants and children up to 2 years of age: safety and efficacy have not been established.
Usual pediatric prescribing limits
500 mg per day for pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and the first day of dosing for otitis media and pneumonia.
250 mg per day for days two through five for otitis media and pneumonia.
Contraindications
Except under special circumstances, this medication should not be used when the following medical problem exists:
Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycins, or other macrolides
Risk-benefit should be considered when the following medical problem exists:
Hepatic function impairment.
(Because biliary excretion is the major route of elimination, caution should be used in patients with hepatic function impairment)
